Tivo Shares Surge on Buyout Speculation
Because Tivo is so beleaugered, it seems they will be relatively cheap as far as corporate buyouts go. Also, everyone is buzzing (again) about digital hubs and whatnot, and how Apple is in ‘prime position’ to become the centerpiece of the digital home media network device thing.
Could this also foretell the Tivo/Video iPod? (finally!) Imagine an iPod that had Tivo-level functionality with iPod grace and UI. The Tivo iPod would automatically synchronize and store all your Tivo’s content. It would really put the current crop of video players to shame. I can already see Jobs at the next MacWorld, talking about the ‘torturous interface’ that current video players have…

Someone at Macrumors posted that this Napster brou-ha-ha would be bad for all digital music vendors and customers, including Apple. While its pad PR, in my opinion this is most definitely NOT the case. In fact I think it will definitely benefit Apple in the end. I posted there but wanted to post my thoughts here as well.
What is required for online music is not an unpenetrable DRM scheme, it’s simply for purchased online music to be no easier to rip off than regular CD’s. You can get around Apple’s DRM, but if I’m going to steal music I’d rather download a 256 kbps VBR that someone ripped from a CD. Or just borrow and copy said CD from a friend. DRM-free music is all over the place, 99.9% of which did not come from cracking iTunes DRM.
