TMF: Is the iPod really that much better than others? / Apple (AAPL):
Yes and by a wide margin, in my opinion.
Was at Best Buy checking out the other players. A lot is made about how the iPod is the hip choice, or even the no-longer-hip choice due to its ubiquity. Or other factors, such as iTunes and the iEconomy.

Cingular’s music download service announced for 2006 - Engadget - www.engadget.com: “Cingular’s music download service announced for 2006″
There are often ‘I can out-big-picture-you’ type claims of how music playing cell phones will swallow up the iPod. But the market dynamics of cell phone industry make this practically impossible for the near future.

When I talk about how the big networks are bound to shrink and the distributed network will prevail, I always use the example of Jon Stewart on CNN’s Crossfire: When he eviscerated the arguers there, the segment got about 150,000 viewers. And then it disappeared into big-network ether.

What Is eBay Thinking?
I think the key to understanding this purchase is to consider EBay’s long-term plans. They are likely planning to stretch EBay beyond auctions, to a larger community that facilitates direct communication between members. EBay auctions basically do this, even though they are narrowly confined to person-to-person (P2P?) sales. EBay also owns 25% of Craigslist, and I think adding Skype is another step in this direction. I think this both risky (in terms of possibly diluting brand), and very ambitious as well.
